Intacs
What Are Intacs?
Designed for patients with mild
nearsightedness, Intacs are two clear plastic (polymethylmethacrylate)
segments, each having an arc length of 150 degrees that are inserted
in the periphery of the cornea at approximately two-thirds depth,
and are surgically inserted through a small radial incision in
the corneal stroma. Intacs are very small (smaller than a soft
contact lens), and can not be felt by the patient. Only small
levels of nearsightedness from -1.00 to -3.00 diopters can be
corrected using this technology. Intacs gently reshape the curve
of the cornea (slightly flattening the center of the cornea)
to allow light rays to focus properly on the retina. Intacs are
a flexible solution as they can be replaced or removed as eyesight
naturally changes with age. The procedure involves topical anesthetic
drops to numb the eye and two semicircular tunnels are made in
the cornea for placement of the Intacs.
