Currently subject to an FDA investigational study, phakic IOL's offer much promise for improved vision. An intraocular lens, much like a contact
lens is permanently inserted in front of the natural lens of
the eye (between the Iris and the patient´s own lens)
to reduce or eliminate extreme levels of nearsightedness and
farsightedness. Since the natural lens of the eye is non removed,
focusing accommodation is preserved. As in Refractive Lensectomy,
the procedure is performed using topical anesthesia through
a microscopic incision without the use of sutures. The surgery
takes less than 10 minutes. This procedure can be fine-tuned
by using LASIK after 3 months.
